Title: Powerdance: A Story of a Metro Manila Dance Company
Authors: Montesa, Lizbeth R.
Abstract: Many dance companies have been formed in the Philippines since
the American period. Some are now defunct; others have successfully
maintained their status. In the last ten years, Powerdance has been
successfully participating in the dance world, both local and
international. But there has been no formal study of this group.
The thesis is a descriptive study of Powerdance, with the following
objectives: to give an overview of dance during the American period and
the Metro Manila-based dance companies that emerged; to describe
the history of modern jazz in the Philippines; to analyze how Powerdance
operates by looking at the managerial and artistic aspects.
Data for the study were obtained from library research and
interviews, and from Powerdance souvenir programs to establish the
history of the company, and videotaped performances to describe the
choreography of the group.
The thesis as baseline research can be an important addition to the
history of dance. It could also be used by other dance companies that
may want to adapt the management and artistic style of Powerdance.
The American occupation brought different forms of dance such
as ballet, modern dance and jazz, and foreign dancers that helped in the
development of dance in the Philippines. The first modern dance
company was formed in the 1930s. Jazz dance was first performed in
bodabil shows during the American period but it was not until the 1960s
that a jazz dance group was formed. Jazz dance has the same basic
techniques as ballet but, unlike ballet, its movements are snappy and
syncopated and stresses body isolations. One of these jazz dance
companies is Powerdance, founded by Douglas Nierras in 1988. Aside
from performing in concerts and product-launching shows, the dance
company runs Powerdance Studio that offers classes in ballet, jazz,
hiphop, ballroom, and aerobics. The company generates sufficient
income from the clientele of the Studio and its shows. All managerial
and artistic decisions are made by Douglas Nierras. Although the training
technique is jazz, its performance medium is show dance using all forms
like folk, ethnic, hiphop, ballet and jazz. Its choreography is innovative
and stretches the limits of the human body. In its existence of ten years,
Powerdance continues to perform actively.
A major problem observed in this dance company was the lack of
proper documentation of its performances and a written mission-vision
statement. It should keep an active file of photographs and videotapes
of its performances, souvenir programs, press releases and reviews. It
should formulate a mission-vision statement to serve as a guide for
succeeding dancers in the company.

Title: A Study on the Level of Organizational Commitment of the Members of the Rotary Club of Cabuyao Circle (RCCC) and How is it Manifested in Group Performance
Authors: Baculpo, Marilyn C.
Abstract: Sometime June 1999, the Rotary Club of Cabuyao Circle (RCCC) planned
to come up with a series of cable television shows on the importance of a
college/vocational degree after high school as a part of their
career-orientation program service for the community. This project proposal of
the RCCC has led the students to study the community of Cabuyao as the
subject for individual theses. This also prompted the researcher to study the
members of the group of RCCC, mainly because of their voluntary work for
RCCC.
This paper tackles organizational commitment and how it is manifested in
the performance of a group. Organizational commitment has been defined as
a representation of agreement on the part of the employees with the goals
and objectives of an organization and a willingness to work towards these goals.
The main problem of this study is to know the level of commitment of the
members of the Rotary Club of Cabuyao Circle (RCCC). Its subproblems
include: (a) What are the indicators of the commitment of its members?; (b)
How are these manifested in the group?(c) What are the factors contributing
to the level of organizational commitment among its members?; and (d) Does it
have an effect on group performance?
The Organizational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ), designed by
Steers and Mowday in 1979, has been used to serve as a measuring tool for the
level of commitment of the members of the RCCC. It has 15 items, each
presenting statements about the respondents' sentiments towards the group
they belong to, their relationship with its members and its impact on their
personal lives. Five items are negatively phrased, thus the scoring is reversed. A
Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the members has also been done to get
in-depth explanations of their responses in the questionnaire.
To measure the data gathered from the questionnaire, the mean
measure of central tendency has been employed. The questionnaire has been
presented and analyzed on a per respondent and a per item level and verified
with their responses from the FGD.
A 5.00 result from the questionnaire means that the level of commitment is
high and deviations from 5.00 signifies a lower level of commitment, depending
on the points gained. This constant value is computed by adding the highest
possible answers for all the items, divided by the number of items. Results show
that the level of commitment is high, after getting a computed mean of 5.02 for
the group. Factors contributing to this high commitment are what the group has
coined their Anchors of Friendship which are: Open Communication, Feeling of
Belongingness, Acceptance of Limitations, Being Positive in Outlook, Going the
Extra Mile for Others, Flexibility, Trust, Resourcefulness and Sense of Humor.
Furthermore, indicators of this high level of commitment are their sense. of pride
in their affiliation with the group, loyalty to the group and synonymous personal
values to that of the group's values.
In return, the members level of commitment has directly contributed to
the performance of the group for the past three years, which are evidenced by
the number of awards and citations the group has received. On their first year of
service, they have been fortunate to receive the Rookie Club of the Year.
Thus, the level of commitment of members has an effect on the
performance of the group, and in a macro sense, in the organization they are
working for. The members have been willing to share and sacrifice what they
have, both material and immaterial for the group to thrive.

Title: Ang Kuweba Mistika ng Antipolo Ayon sa Mga Kuwento at Paniniwala
Authors: De Leon, Corazon R.
wishing well, wishing heart, wedding bell, Diyos Ama, Diyos Anak, Diyos espirito
ahas at kamelyo.

Title: An Exploratory Research on the Practice of Brand Management of the Philippine American Life and General Insurance Co., Inc.
Authors: Garcia, France Joyce S.
Abstract: Brands have been central to marketing for more than a century, and its most
essential function is to create a distinction among entities that may satisfy a customer's
need. The logic of brand management has been "Build a brand, and the world will beat
a path to its door". Brands perform many functions such as brand reduction for buyers,
facilitation for sellers, facilitation for the introduction of new products, facilitation of
promotional efforts, and also the facilitation of premium pricing as well as the facilitation
of market segmentation, and brand loyalty (Berthon, etal., 1999).
These functions spur diverse firms to base their strategies almost entirely on
building brands. The trends that are changing brand management today include the
influx of information technology, the changing consumer values, and the emergence of
brand/product/service mimicry. Brand managers are held responsible for the success of
single bi-ands or categories of products (Berthon, etal., 1999).
In view of this, the researcher wished to determine how the Philippine American
Life and General Insurance Co., Inc. (Philamlife) effectively practices the concept of
Brand Management. Subsequent problems that the researcher also aimed to answer are
the following:
1. With the onset of technological changes, what are the steps that Philamlife is
willing to undertake to cope with these technological advancements?
2. With the changing consumer values, what are the tactics that Philamlife is
using to keep its current market and lure a larger market?
3. With the introduction of new insurance companies with their respective
products and services, how does Philamlife intend to be competitive and
maintain its position in being the number 1 insurance company in the
country?
Information on how the Philippine Life and General Insurance Co., Inc.
(Philamlife) practices the concept of brand management could aid in the implementation
of a new program for brand management to increase productivity and profitability for
the company. This study would also show the importance of long-term planning for any
company, business or organization. It would also broaden knowledge of the concept of
brand management for the current study's readers.
The scope of the study revolved around the practice of brand management by
the Philippine Life and General Insurance Co., Inc. (Philamlife).
The current study involved personal interviews by the researcher with the
employees of the Philippine Life and General Insurance Co., Inc. (Philamlife) whom are
directly associated with its brand/product/service management with the aid of an
--
interview schedule. The study was limited in its representativeness and generalizability
due to the small sample and qualitative analytical procedure.
From the data gathered and analyzed by the researcher, the following
conclusions have been reached about the company:
•	In terms of customer-service, the Philippine Life and General Insurance Co.,
Inc. has adapted well to the technological changes in the corporate world
with their web site, 24-hour Call Center, E-mail programs for all branches and
offices nationwide, and E-mail literacy for employees of the company.
•	Product and service diversification facilitates for better service of Philamlife.
•	In terms of advertising, Philamlife focuses more on improving corporate
image instead of promoting specific brands/products/services.
•	Personalized customer service and stability will be the key ingredients for
Philamlife to be able maintain its competitiveness and position being the
number 1 insurance company in the country.
•	Overall, the Philippine Life and General Insurance Co., Inc. concentrates in
improving its image with the public since the company believes that a good
image projects good products and services.
And from these conclusions, the researcher has decided to give the following
recommendations:
To Philamlife, the company should:
•	should engage in long-term planning so as to anticipate the needed changes
in the concept of brand-management.
•	should allow consumers to be able to purchase insurance policies on-line
through their web site, provided that there would be a background check
before policies can actually be sold to clients.
•	create brand management teams for each product or service Philamlife offers
to ensure the brand's successful performance, assessed by monitoring shifts
in the brand's share of the market and/or contribution to profit.
•	concentrate on advertising geared towards the Class C market of the
population stressing on the benefits of pre-need insurance policies.
•	improve their advertising schemes to gain more exposure to the current
market. The Philippine Life and General Insurance Co., Inc. should
concentrate in promoting its products and services more than its corporate
image.
To future researchers of the concept of brand management, the researcher recommends
that:
•	the company chosen to be evaluated in its effectiveness is a well-known and
established company for them to trace back the success of their respective
companies.
•	there should be an accommodating contact person inside the chosen
company to be researched on so as to be able to visit the company often for
better and more accurate observations.
•	There should be an increase the research's sample size to be able to give
better generalizations and conclusions on the researched company.
