Bata, bata, ba’t la nagkasala?: A Descriptive Study on Juvenile Delinquency of Youth in Metro Manila

Title: Bata, bata, ba’t la nagkasala?: A Descriptive Study on Juvenile Delinquency of Youth in Metro Manila
Authors: Sampang, Adrian V.
Abstract: This research explores the concept of juvenile delinquency under interwoven
psychological, sociological and anthropological milieu. A profile of the juvenile
delinquents was constructed. It also investigated on the dynamics of psychological
variables such as temperament, frustration and moral functioning, sociological variables
such as family dynamics, peer association, social support and cultural variables such as
norms, beliefs, and practices influence that influence juvenile delinquency.
Two types of approaches were used in this study: quantitative and qualitative.
For the quantitative part, a questionnaire was administered to the respondents who
composed 20% of the population. The 56 participants, who were randomly chosen came
from the Manila Youth Reception Center and Molave Youth home-two of three main
youth detention centers in Metro Manila. The instrument employed was Sampang's
Juvenile Delinquency Strain Measure 2010 (SJDSM 2010)- an instrument that the author
has devised himself using exhaustive consultation to related literature. The instrument
was pretested. Validity and reliability were duly established prior to instrument
administration. It was also certified by the Sentro ng Wikang Filipino in UP Manila.
For the quantitative part, in-depth interviews and a focus group discussion ensued
with purposively chosen respondents using themes observed from data analysis of the
quantitative results.
Data analysis using the Statistical Package for the Social Science version 17
(SPSS I 7) involved computation of frequencies and measures of central tendencies of the
socio-demographic and strain variables. Bivariate correlations using Pearson r was also
utilized for further analysis. Resulting themes from the qualitative data were also probed
and scrutinized.
The consequential profile garnered and the correlations and strains scored
obtained point to poverty as a main determinant for delinquency. Peer group affiliation
was seen as the main reason for delinquency. Family functioning and family violence
were probable determinants of association with delinquent peers. Also, neighborhood
structure and vices proved to be correlated with delinquency. All of these strains have
been observed to cast pressure on the youth's psyche through stigma. With all these
findings, this research concludes, and in the process verifies its hypothesis, that juvenile
delinquency is influenced by the interplay of psychological, social and cultural variables.

A Survey on Adolescent Pregnancy and Sexual Perceptions and Behavior of Young Women in Metro Manila

Title: A Survey on Adolescent Pregnancy and Sexual Perceptions and Behavior of Young Women in Metro Manila
Authors: Obong, Laurence Chester C.
Abstract: Biologically speaking, since puberty, adolescent females are ready to reproduce,
therefore ready to start sexual life. However, that is not true. Emotional aspects besides
social, economic, cultural and many other factors play major influence in the sexual
initiation of each individual. Today, this initiation is happening more and more
prematurely. More and more adolescents precociously start to initiate their sexual lives
as consequence of diverse factors. And most of the time the repercussions are not always
positive
More and more young women engage in early sexual intercourse or premarital sex.
While only a little more than half of the sexually active population of young women get
pregnant before the age of 21, the number is still alarming also when you consider the
number of young women who resort into abortion practices as a way of resolving their
unplanned pregnancy.
Identifying patterns of behavior among sexually active young females, from those who
have not had any form of sexual experience up to those who have had abortion, is a great
undertaking; considering its entire contribution not only to the understanding of young
females but also to the intervention of looming social crises that are the effects of sexual
behavior, e.g. spread of sexually transmitted diseases and increase in adolescent
pregnancies among many others.
Key Words: adolescent pregnancy, young female sexual perceptions and behavior,
premarital sex, influential factors among adolescents, patterns of behavior.

A Descriptive Study of Intact First Marriages in Urban Makati

Title: A Descriptive Study of Intact First Marriages in Urban Makati
Authors: Pulgo, Rachel C.
Abstract: This study was conducted to present the marital relationships and domestic lives of
wives, those who have been married for approximately thirty years and those who have
been married for approximately ten years, with focus on the factors that promoted
marital success. The investigator made use of in-depth personal interviews to more than
forty wives. The site of the study was 13arangay East Rembo from the municipality of
Makati. Results showed that the wives, regardless of generation, still upheld numerous
cultural values as pertaining to marriage and the family namely; same religion,
significance of a church wedding over a civil ceremony, source of marital and family
expertise, perception of division of labor in the household, and financial management
for the family. However, there were also some major changes that the newer generation
of Filipino families is exhibiting such as the decreasing parental control over decisions of
whom and when their children are to marry. Also the increasing independence of
women in the country is slowly changing patterns of interactions between husbands and
wives. Filipinas are delaying nuptiality in pursuit of higher education and career
advancements. The number of children Filipino couples have and intend to have is
becoming lesser. All these factors were discussed. Lastly, the recommendations of the
investigator for further study was discussed.

Title: A Study on the Relationship Between the Adolescents’ Self-Esteem and the Perceived Parenting Styles
Authors: Calingasan, Charlene Mae C.
Abstract: Evident in the Philippine context is the close family ties, therefore, making the
family one of the major factors of how one views oneself. It is the family which directly
and obliquely shapes one's perceptions about himself/herself and his/her attitude. The
relationship among family members. including parent-child, sibling, and marital
subsystems. has a great influence on the development of an individual. Developmental
psychologists have recognized the importance of parenting throughout the years. Parents
play a large role in fostering their child's growth and development. One of the robust
factors in parenting is the parenting style. That is why parenting style is among the key
determinants of an individual's outcome.
This is the study of the Relationship Between the Adolescents' Self-Esteem and
the Percei ,eel Parenting Styles. The objectives of the study are the following: (I) to
determine the different parenting styles. (2) to define and understand the self-esteem of
the adolescents, and (3) to determine the significant difference in the level of self-esteem
of the adolescents with different parenting styles.
The study used quantitative method of research. It was conducted using self administered
survey-type questionnaires among 4th year high school students. The
questionnaire was designed in three parts, as follows: (I) Demographic Profile, (II)
Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale, and (III) Different parenting styles. Data were gathered
among five (5) 4th year high school sections of De La Salle-Lipa. There was a total of
187 respondents (males = 77; females = 110). After the data collection and analysis, the
researcher found out that there is a significant difference in the level of self-esteem with
varying parenting styles at <.00 I. However, the family structures have no significant
difference in the level of self-esteem of the adolescents.
It is concluded that an adolescent's self-esteem is greatly affected by the parenting
style employed by their parents. However, the parenting styles used by the parents do not
vary on the birth order of the respondents. It is also concluded that the family structures
have no significant difference in the level of self-esteem of the respondents.
The study made some recommendations for parents, professionals and future
researchers.
