A Phenomenological Study on the Concept of Mother’s Instinct Among Mothers Working as Policewomen

Abstract

The aim of this research is to better understand the lives of mothers working as policewomen by exploring the phenomenon of mother’s instinct through their perspective. The objectives of this study are (1) to identify the emic meaning attached to the concept of mother’s instinct among mothers working as policewomen; (2) to identify the factors that contribute to the manifestation of their mother’s instinct; (3) to identify the effects of the police women’s nature of work in their mother’s instinct; (4) to illustrate any experiences they had in relation to the concept of mother’s instinct. This research explores the phenomenon of mother’s instinct through the use of qualitative research design in the form of Phenomenology. The results of this study show that all the participants associate the term mother’s instinct with heightened vigilance to the point of paranoia. It was also seen that even though maternal instinct is seen as part of a mother’s biological make-up, factors like rationality and socio-cultural environment played a role in the manifestation and variation of mother’s instinct among mother’s working as policewomen.
