Abstract: | Fruiting body of Schizophylhim commune Fr: Fr is a potential source of bioactive compounds, which may be responsible for several medicinal properties, one of which is hypoglycemic property. Crude extraction was performed by subjecting the fruiting bodies into different drying methods (oven drying, air drying, freeze drying) and extracting solvents (methanol, 95% ethanol, hexane) resulting to a total of nine crude extracts (FM, OM, AM, FE, OE, AE, FH, OH, AH). The result shows that crude extract obtained from OM yielded the greatest amount in terms of mass with 9.1 lg while crude extract obtained from the same drying method but by extracting solvent hexane (OH) yielded the lowest amount in terms of mass with 0.51 g. Difference in yield of crude extracts may be attributed to the difference in polarity of the extracting solvents used, though two-way ANOVA showed that yield differences among the crude extracts are not statistically significant. The crude extracts were subjected to Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) to detect quantitatively the potential hypoglycemic property of the extracts with human insulin as standard. Using BIOSOFT Quantiscan software the dissolved and separated compounds after TLC showed that crude extract FM yielded the highest concentration of dissolved compound in the solvent system of insulin with 0.81 mg/ml while crude extract AH yielded the least concentration of dissolved compounds in the solvent system of insulin with 0.05 mg/ml. However, concentration of each crude extract does not reflect the actual amount of compounds with hypoglycemic activity. The fact that crude extracts dissolved in the TLC solvent system of insulin suggested that S. commune demonstrated potential hypoglycemic activity. |
