Title: Exploring the Phenomenon of Andropause and Its Impact on the Filipino Male and Family
Authors: Austria, Michael Angelo A.
Issue Date: Mar-2006
Abstract: The study focused on the middle-aged Filipino male, who undergoes a natural process popularly known as andropause. Andropause is a normal part of aging, wherein the production of testosterone declines. For some, this decline is accompanied by changes in self-image, sexual libido and general health and well-being. Such changes do not just affect the male undergoing andropause. They also affect his nuclear family, comprised of his wife and children. This study intends to determine the effects on the individual and his immediate family. First, research on the definition of the condition was undertaken, as well as extensive comparison of its forms in the fields of medicine, psychology and Filipino culture. Afterwards, pre-testing on males aged 17 and above was pursued, in order to confirm the increase of andropausal conditions as a result of the aging process. Males identified as having definite and advanced andropause were subsequently given a questionnaire with open-ended queries. A similar instrument was distributed to their wives and one of their children. Afterwards, specialists provided the scientifically proven and generally accepted definitions, symptoms and parameters of andropause. Data gathered through this research endeavor can provide the reader with awareness, and a greater capacity for enlightened action towards males undergoing andropause. Further research and information dissemination are recommended.
