The Socioeconomic Impact of Robinsons Place in Small - Scale Industries in Ermita

Abstract

Small-scale industries are key component in the economic life of the Philippines. They can be seen as a kind of industrial breeding ground. Small-scale industries comprises of the service and manufacturing sectors. The service sectors can fulfill domestic consumption given the country's abundance in labor, it is also highly accessible because it does not require huge amounts of capital and highly advance technological inputs; the manufacturing sector can serve domestic needs and produce quality exports if only they will be empowered by the government and provides them an equal competitive environment. This can be done by implementing laws that will prepare the small-scale industries on the road to national industrialization. The small-scale industries are bigger in number as compared to the large - establishments. However, large market shares and profits are concentrated only to a few large enterprises. The study was conducted in Pedro Gil, Faura, Orosa, Adriatico, Bocobo and Sta. Monica. Its aim was to determine if Robinsons Place Manila has socio-economic impact on the small-scale industries that were covered by the study in the aforementioned streets. Based on the research conducted, Robinsons Place does not exhibit a cutthroat competition among small-scale industries but the popular culture it imbibes among consumers helps aggravate the problems of small-scale industries - high inflation of prices and high cost of rent- because it lures consumers away from them. This will inevitably lead to their retrenchment or closure in the future.
