Authors: Alindato, Wy-nona M.
Issue Date: Mar-2007
Abstract: This paper deals with the bilateral relations of South Korea and the Philippines. The major topics that are included in this paper are their historical relations, economic policies, and the presence of Korean telenovelas in the Philippine television industry. Chapter One includes research questions and objectives, thesis statement, review of related literature, theoretical and conceptual framework, definition of terms, research design, ethical aspect, scope and limitation, and relevance of the study. Basically, the information in this chapter is needed to start the thesis paper. Chapter Two describes the historical relationship of South Korea and the Philippines. Its scope ranges from the time of the Korean War (and even a few years back before it happened) until the early 90s. It tackles the issues regarding the role of the U.S, globalization, international organizations, and regional blocs in the relationship of the two countries, the establishment of each country's embassy, signed agreements on trade and other cooperative efforts. The data are presented in a chronological order. Chapter Three deals with the economic policies of South Korea and the Philippines vis-a-vis one another. This chapter includes the basic foreign (economic) policies of the two countries. It also talks about their bilateral relations in terms of their respective economic policies. However, since the bilateral economic relation of the two countries doesn't have much in it, this chapter included the Free Trade Agreement between the ASEAN and South Korea. Furthermore, it also tackled the role of the relationship of the Philippines with South Korea. The Free Trade Agreement of ASEAN and South Korea became the bulk of this chapter. Included in it are the negative and positive implications that it will bring to the Philippine economy as a member nation of ASEAN. With the popularity of Korean telenovelas in the Philippines a chapter was made to tackle it. Chapter Four talks about such popularity of Korean telenovelas. Acquisition of such programs, its effects in the society, both positive and negative, and how such programs are characterized, were also included in this chapter. The results of the survey that was made by the researcher regarding the impact of Korean telenovelas can be found in this chapter. Chapter Five is the summary and conclusion of the study made. Recommendations on how the study can be further improved are also included. The conclusions made are based on the gathered facts and data through the interviews that were conducted, the survey, and literature reviews.
