dc.description.abstract | As a symbol of national pride and a tribute to Andrés Bonifacio and the Katipunan, the Bonifacio Monument, commonly known as Monumento, represents notable historical significance for the Filipinos. Utilizing a multi-faceted approach involving interviews, a field visit, and a comprehensive analysis of preservation documents and records, this undergraduate thesis examined the various preservation efforts and the complexities surrounding the conservation of this iconic landmark. This study identified two primary entities involved in the conservation of Monumento – the Caloocan City Local Government Unit (LGU) and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP). By gathering the insights of these two entities, this research aimed to identify the strategies and challenges in the preservation of the landmark and to evaluate the preservation efforts surrounding it. Through a comprehensive analysis, the study revealed both shared and divergent approaches between the two entities in preserving the landmark. Furthermore, this study uncovered a range of challenges including political, financial, and administrative factors, as well as the interplay of Monumento’s urban context and natural factors affecting the enduring existence of the monument. By exploring the insights provided by the Caloocan City LGU and the NHCP on the preservation of Monumento, this research aimed to contribute to a deeper understanding of the efforts and challenges involved in heritage conservation, emphasizing the importance of collaborative action, strategic planning, and public engagement in safeguarding Monumento’s rich cultural and historical heritage for future generations. With the data acquired from this research, an action plan was created to integrate the identified strategies and challenges and suggest plans of action to further improve the preservation efforts surrounding the heritage structure. During the course of this study, a significant gap in academic discourse on Monumento and monuments, in general, was discovered. This research therefore advocates for more comprehensive studies on Monumento to gain a deeper understanding of its unique characteristics and the perspectives of both managing entities and the public. Additionally, investigating how preservation efforts influence Filipinos’ attitudes and perceptions regarding their national heroes and historical figures would be highly valuable. The researcher believes that such initiatives would enhance the understanding of the importance of monuments in Filipino society. | en_US |
