Modelo o trapo?: On the sangguniang kabataan abolition the case of Aparri Cagayan

Abstract

The Sangguniang Kabataan is a branch of the government lead by the youth. It aims to represent and empower the youth especially in the barangay level. Through time, the people, especially the policy-makers saw that the Sangguniang Kabataan officials are no longer effective in doing their duties and responsibilities. Issues like corruption and election-related cheating involving Sangguniang Kabataan officials sprang up nationwide. Now policy-makers are pushing for its abolition and they are opposed by those who want to reform it. The researcher therefore conducted this study in order to know whether the grounds for its abolition exist within her hometown, Aparri, and whether or not they would want the Sangguniang Kabataan to be abolished. In conclusion, the researcher found out that most of the grounds for its abolition do exist in her hometown. However the people, depending on what sector they belong, have different opinions on the abolition of Sangguniang Kabataan.
