Del Rosario, Michael L.
This paper is divided into five chapters that will contain the results of the study done.
The first part is an overview of the structure of the paper. It consists of the, the review of related
literature and framework and the methods used to achieve the results and the data necessary to
complete the study. This study aims to identify issues and problems that an arts organization, the
Saigon Company Philippines, encounters given that it is a multicultural in nature. Specifically,
this study identifies various cultural issues and how the employees of this company react to these
issues. It also states some habits, patterns of thought and behavior of Filipinos and foreigners
and how it they affect the management and their performance in their work duties.
Chapter three gives a historical account of the production from London, up to Manila,
where the recent season of Miss Saigon opened. This also included the organizational set-up and
the employment composition of the company.
Chapter three is entitled "Perceptions and Issues Regarding Different Cultural Issues."
This chapter discusses the various cultural issues and how the subjects and respondents of the
study react and deal with the given situations.
Chapter four will discuss other issues not categorized under the issues in the preceding
chapter as seen and observed by Filipinos.
Chapter five on the other hand, is the foreigners' viewpoint As a whole, this study came into a conclusion that although best efforts were given to
maintain harmony and good working relationship within a company with the given nature,
cultural conflict still occurs. Whether or not such issues are addressed, the employees are fully
aware of the marked differences in their cultures and upbringing. The management does not
address such problems as cultural problems, but extends its best effort to address any problems
encountered by the management
Th last chapter consists of recommendations for further studies on similar production to
that on Miss Saigon, the experiences of foreign e:x-patriates working in the Philippines and a
comparative study on Broadway and the local theater scene

pamayanan: lokasyon, topograpiya, klima, populasyon.

Analyzing Communicatively the Socialization Process of New Employees in Rever and David’s Incorporated
Kobayashi, Kumi Angelina O.
Organizations are made up of people working together to achieve a common goal. Without the individuals, organizations would cease to function. The operations, development, and success of a company lie on its over-all makeup of human resources and or manpower. This success relied on the competence, knowledge, and skills of the organizational members. However, effectiveness in the job performance can be attained if one already knows the “ropes” around an organization. Members of the organizations usually learn about the firm they work in upon their entry. They adapt to the life and the system of their new organization by undergoing a process of socialization. The employees’ learning takes place during this stage when they are also indoctrinated and trained to become productive workers. Socialization process may be the nest explanation as to why employees behave the way they do in today’s organizations. Socialization process has been recognized to contribute to individual, group, and organizational effectiveness. The effectiveness of the socialization process could be largely attributed to communication. Socialization process is influenced by the content of the message which the management disseminates to the new employees, the channels used to send these information, the direction or the flow of information dissemination, and the feedback provided by both parties. Moreover, communication plays a major role in making the socialization process of the new employees successful, through the integration of the various communication elements like message, channels, direction, and feedback. How these elements are utilized in the socialization of the employees could help determine the success of the socialization process. Some authors say that there is a close link between effective communication and effective socialization process. A successful communication encounter would also lead to a successful encounter. In this context, socialization is a communicative act. How this is done however, is not yet clear. Hence, this study aims to view the socialization process communicatively. For this purpose, this research aims to answer this problem: From a communication’s viewpoint, how are the new employees socialized in a Filipino organization named Rever and David’s Inc.? With this, the study therefore has the following sub-problems: (1) What is the socialization process of new employees in Rever and David’s Inc.?: What information are most commonly communicated to the new employees?; (3) What message channels are employed?; (4) What is the communication low in the transmission of messages during the socialization process?; and (5) What are the perceived effects of the socialization process on the new employees? Socialization process is usually viewed from an anthropological or sociological viewpoint. With this study, socialization would be analyzed from a different light, that of communication. The method used was a descriptive-evaluative research. A questionnaire was administered to the respondents dealing with the company’s socialization programs, the methods used, and the perceived effects. It helped determine which are the most common communication channels and direction, message type, and feedback existing during the socialization process. Interviews were conducted to validate the data gathered through the questionnaire. It was found that among the employees of Rever and David’s Inc., orientation and training programs are the priority and the most popular socialization activities. These programs provide employees with the most substantive information about company policies, regulations and guidelines, and allow the employees to use their skills to the fullest. Employees are trained to meet the standard set by the company in serving its clients. The socialization process of the new employees is basically geared toward informing them about company information and task or job description. Socialization activities are conveyed through the use of information channels such as the telephone, fax messages, memos, and announcements from the management or notices posted in the bulletin board, both upward and downward channels. Giving of feedback is also encouraged for a better working relationship. New employees in Rever and David’s Inc. believe that training and orientation are the most effective socialization activities, while the least effective are lectures and mentoring.
The communication in the company helps in the success of the socialization encounters of the employees. The diversity and versatility in the use of different communication channels, the flow of information, the appropriateness of the content of the messages, and even the presence and acceptance of grapevine information help achieve a positive climate within the organization.

A Study on the Rehabilitation Project of the St. Alphonsus Mary de Liguori Parish Church
Guda, Abigail G.
The Study on the Rehabilitation Project of St. Alphonsus Mary
de Liguori Parish Church answers the question: How was the
rehabilitation of the St. Alphonsus Mary de Liguori Parish
Church managed? It examines the two fundamental aspects of
project management, which are planning and implementation. The
study documents the history and background, and the
architectural features of the St. Alphonsus Mary de Liguori
Parish Church prior to the rehabilitation project. The study
also documents the rehabilitation project and the changes made
to the original structure.
In 1968, National Artist for Architecture Leandro V. Locsin
designed the St. Alphonsus Mary de Liguori Parish Church, whose
design is the precursor of that of the Folk Arts Theater.
Unfortunately, in September 9, 2005, the interior of the parish
church was badly damaged in a fire brought about by faulty
electrical wiring. The damage was extensive that only the 28
concrete buttresses and the fins of the old church structure
remained which accounts to 70-80% of the whole structure.
Through the initiative of parish priest, Rev. Fr. Benito B.
Tuazon, and the collaboration of the parish community, the
church underwent rehabilitation with Dominic Galicia as its new architect. There are two committees-the Fundraising Committee
and the Construction Committee-formed to handle the management
of the rehabilitation project of the St. Alphonsus Mary de
Liguori Parish Church.
With the proper guidance of Architect Dominic Galicia, the
parish decided on a
returning a building
preserving the features
rehabilitation project which involves
into use through alteration while
of the original building which are
significant to its historical and architectural value. Architect
Dominic Galicia, as a member of the Advisory Council of the
Heritage Conservation Society, was very much concerned about
preserving the remaining concrete structures of the old church
to honor the work of Architect Leandro V. Locsin as a National
Artist.
However, in any construction project for churches, the need of
the parish should be attended first before any architectural
concern. As a result, in the design of the rehabilitated parish
church, the remaining fins of the old church had to be
eliminated in the process to provide room for the frontline and
in the mezzanine. In the rehabilitated St. Alphonsus Mary de
Liguori Parish Church, the 28 concrete buttresses were the only
parts of the old church structure that were retained. Hence,
Architect Leandro V. Locsin' s essential architectural character of massive floating roof slab can no longer be seen. The reason
for this can be attributed to the primary concern of addressing
to the need of the parish for a bigger place of worship.
With only few refinements left, the St. Alphonsus Mary de
Liguori Parish Church was ready for use in time for the feast
day of Saint Alphonsus on August 01, 2007. The actual
rehabilitation project took almost two years which corresponds
to what Architect Dominic Galicia has expected. In terms of the
actual cost, the proposed budget of 40 million escalated to more
than 64 million due to unavoidable circumstance which is the
high inflation rate during the rehabilitation project.
The St. Alphonsus Mary de Liguori Parish was successful in its
seven objectives for the rehabilitated parish Church. The first in
accordance with the Liturgical Requirements of the Catholic
Church-was achieved through the constant communication of the
parish to the Liturgical Commission. The second-it will imbibe
and express the charisma of the patron saint, St. Alphonsus-was
ensured with the extensive research done by Architect Dominic
Galicia about the life and work of St. Alphonsus and
incorporating it in the design of the rehabilitated parish
church. The third-it will be durable and could withstand the
test of time and natural threats-was ensured by hiring a world
expert in seismic engineering, Structural Engineer Carlos Villaraza. The fourth-it will be functional and worshipper oriented-
is brought about by complying with the Liturgical
Guidelines. The fifth-done in the most economical way possible was
achieved by applying the concept of value engineering and
direct negotiation of the parish with the suppliers. The fifth environmentally
concerned-was attained by the incorporation of
operable glass window in the church's new design. The last something
bigger-was achieved by adding a mezzanine level.
The study concluded that the rehabilitation of the St.
Alphonsus Mary de Liguori Parish Church was effectively and
efficiently managed by the key people involved which aid for the
achievement of the vision and objectives of the parish. This was
realized through the careful planning, constant coordination,
and having vision and objectives. Consequently, a magnificent
and liturgically sound parish church comes out from the ruins of
the original structure.
Furthermore, even though, the 28 concrete buttresses are now
only 20-30% of the new church, it is worth mentioning that the
parish made an effort to save what was left of the church
designed by National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin.
Having a background on architectural heritage preservation is of
great importance. Without this, what was left of the church
might have been totally lost.
