Abstract:
Extracts from 17 Pliilippine sponges from the UP Marine Science collection were
tested for their anti-platelet aggregation (APA) activity using the Giemsa assay. Crude
methanol extracts were dried and then dissolved in dimethysulfbxide at a final
concentration of 10 mg/mL. Positive APA result was characterized by 比e absence of
violet gels in the wells. Only one out of the 17 specimens showed APA activity. This
was a sponge coded as PK 97 3-38 by the UP-MSI Marine Natural Products Team. The
thin-layer chromatography (TLC) profile of PK 97 3-38 test extract was examined to
partially characterized the active components of the sponge. Further isolation and
purification of the extract from the screened specimen is recommended.
