Abstract:
One of the accepted mantras of our time is that we are living now in a globalized world.
Or perhaps, in a rather more considered description, we live in a world which is in the process of
globalization. Urbanization and industrialization are thus the by-products of globalization and
with these processes, a clear distinction of the modem period from the earlier could be provided.
In 1950s up to the 1960s, the years of transformation of Makati City from an agricultural
to industrial center was manifested by the growth of multi-national companies which were
welcomed by its local government to invest and conduct business. Thereafter, labor opportunities
for people were sought throughout the city. Even women, who were conventionally known
staying at home while their men folk ventured out to work, had various jobs and careers
extensively laid out for them in the city. Hence, the role of women nowadays has been widely
credited in the socio-economic development particularly of Makati City.
However, it is essential to remark the pros and cons for women upon working in an urban
and corporate place. Their share to the labor force means a lot to the economic growth of the
society yet it is likewise more favorable to the city if it is able to help women to develop their
potentials and achieve human development.
This study entitled MAKATI CITY: The Jobstreet of Contemporary Females (An
Exploratory Study on the Orientation of Career and Job Preferences of Women in the
Highly—Urbanized City) relatively expose the lives of working women, their conditions, values
and perspectives upon working in the city. Mainly, it explores how the local government of
Makati City and private institutions effectively supply the needed services, redefine their roles
and act as an intermediary in career-decision making of women employees through job
opportunities. It also examines the ties that most likely bind women together in a society - i.e.,
the social, economic, political and ethnic ties of women, if they are and how they are affected by
the working environment of an urban place like that of Makati City.
