dc.description.abstract Batangas is one of the provinces in the Philippines that uphold tourism as one of its major development strategies, and it is increasingly being known for its easily accessible beaches and excellent diving spots that are in proximity to Metro Manila. However, with the recent developments, the local livelihoods, the local communities and the environment are being affected. This study analyzes the conditions of three coastal areas - Mabini, Calatagan and Nasugbu - and assesses the resulting impacts of tourism on their jobs, income, culture, living standards, resources and environment among others. A critical examination on the social, economic and environmental impacts of coastal tourism in Batangas was conducted with the help of 90 survey respondents, and other necessary documents containing statistics, situationers, and development plans. This study argues that tourism in Batangas gives more advantages than disadvantages on the local community in the economic and environmental aspects, but it poses greater harm than benefits on the social aspect. In addition, it also argues the government and the tourism agencies provide sufficient and effective policies and programs for the development of the economic and environmental spheres but lack development plans for the strengthening and empowerment of the local community. On the coasts of Batangas, coastal management efforts such as the creation of marine protected areas and patrolling of the bantay dagat improved environmental conditions, but limits the access of the local residents on their resources, affecting them greatly in economic terms. At present, it can be said that there needs to be greater sustainable projects for the coastal areas and communities of the province. en_US
