Surveillance System of Hospital-Acquired Infection in the Philippines

Title: Surveillance System of Hospital-Acquired Infection in the Philippines
Authors: Ortile, Edwin Joseph D.
Abstract: Nosocomial or hospital-acquired infections are defined as those that were neither
present nor incubating at the time the patient came for care. Nosocomial infections are a
significant problem throughout the world and they remain to be one of the major
problems of Philippine hospitals. The Surveillance of Hospital-Acquired Infection in the
Philippines (SHIP) was established in 1999 with an aim to create a national database of
nosocomial infections and improve surveillance methods of hospitals in the Philippines.
Registered hospitals were asked to perform prospective nosocomial infection surveillance
on all patients within their own confines using uniform definitions and codes and report
these data to scheduled SHIP meetings. For each nosocomial infection detected, a limited
amount of information on the patient, the infection, the associated risk factors, and the
outcomes of infection should be recorded on a data sheet form. Therefore, there is a need
for an online surveillance system that will systematically collect, analyze and record
patient infection data.
The Surveillance System of Hospital-Acquired Infection in the Philippines (SSHIP) is
a web-based computer program that will aid infection control doctors and nurses on the
data collection and retrieval of important nosocomial infection information. SSHIP
allows {I) infection control nurses to update the Infection Worksheet, Laboratory Data
Form and the ICU Monthly Report Form, (2) infection control doctors and nurses to
generate rates and graphs of the ICU Monthly Report Form, (3) online users to submit
online SHIP Application Forms, and (4) sending via email of notification of application
to Philippine hospitals who submitted their online SHIP Application Forms.

UP-PGH Outpatient Diet Registry System

Title: UP-PGH Outpatient Diet Registry System
Authors: Bodegon, Mark Francis C.
Abstract: A balanced diet is necessary to ensure that a person has enough energy to perform
his tasks and to prevent and alleviate diseases. The Philippine General Hospital Outpatient
Dietary Department is responsible for advising their patient on how to eat properly,
especially those who have special conditions requiring a different diet. The Outpatient Diet
Registry System (ODRS) aims to aid dietitians in providing service. ODRS has three users the
Patient, the Dietitian and the System Administrator. The Patient can view a diet plan
and the menu assigned to him. He may also update his menu. The Dietitian can update
patient records by performing Food Recall, submitting the results of laboratory
examinations, and by assigning a diet plan and a menu. He may also update diet plans,
food items, representative foods and menus. The Dietitian can also generate important
reports such as the Individual Summary Result and the Daily Patient Census. The System
Administrator can update accounts for Patients and Dietitians. He may also choose activate
or deactivate a Dietitian account.

Simulation of Deterministic Turing Machine With and Without Storage

Title: Simulation of Deterministic Turing Machine With and Without Storage
Authors: Young, Genevieve D.
Abstract: Automata and Language Theory is a core course in Computer Science. The course
presents theoretical models of computations, and one of them is the Turing machine.
Construction of Turing machines is often tedious, and conceptualization of their behavior is
difficult. A web-accessible simulator software is developed to provide a means of
analyzing the behavior of a machine graphically. This simulator provides graphical
simulations of the tape and the transition diagram. The software can simulate
deterministic Turing machines (without storage) and a special type of Turing machine that
has storage in the finite control.

Wireless Peer-to-Peer File Sharing

Title: Wireless Peer-to-Peer File Sharing
Authors: Vega, Miguel Agustin C.
Abstract: Modem wireless communications began with the advent of the radio. This
technology allowed communications and the exchange of information without the
logistics of having to lay out cables, as had been the standard at the time. Over the years,
wireless communications technology has advanced and has been applied to many aspects
of everyday life.
The study focused on the use of wireless communications technology as the
means to implement a file-sharing network. The study aimed at achieving this by using a
peer-to-peer architecture of devices. Each computer was given the ability to directly
share files with other nodes without the need for a central server. This model maximizes
the benefits of wireless communications by allowing for greater mobility of the nodes in
the network.
Each node in the network acted as both a client and a server. Servers waited for
connections from clients and then processed them. In the case of the study, servers acted
as file-servers, handling client request for files. Clients connected to servers in order to
request information. The main task of clients in the study was to request files from other
nodes in the network.
The program created by the study allowed users to discover nodes in the area
running the software and connect to them. The shared directory of each node could then
be read in order to see the files a node was willing to share. Finally, a selected file could
then be downloaded.
