Re-Interpretation (Ijtihad) and Legal Reforms in Muslim Family Law: A Study on the Phenomenon of Feminism in Islam

Title: Re-Interpretation (Ijtihad) and Legal Reforms in Muslim Family Law: A Study on the Phenomenon of Feminism in Islam
Authors: Diamse, Sheilla Lynn A.
Abstract: A Muslim Woman thinks her birth, position in society and status are all ordained by God.
The Quran, she believes, has specified her conduct from birth to death. But practice differs from the
precept. The experiences of the women in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime proves that Islam
has been utilized by groups to further aggravate the position of women and secure a male-dominated
society.
There is a pressing need to look at the stories and realities of the status of women and this
study is an attempt to focus on issues that cut across cultural and national boundaries - issues
challenging the traditional societies of the Muslim world. The increasing disparity between the roles
women take in the public and the private sphere and the impact of Western values and institutions
·Muslim communities led to the emergence of advocacies which reflect similarities with the feminist
movements of the West but which express an indigenous form. lt retains the supremacy of Islamic
sources as means of re-asserting the high status granted by Islam to women. As most of the Muslim
countries undergo democratization, the legal system also served as a direct mechanism of improving
the position of Muslim women through enactment of reforms. Where feminist and egalitarian
pressures organized into movements or parties have originated from women, the ensuing reforms
and policy changes appear to be more enduring. Government policies and liberalized, egalitarian laws
are necessary before Muslim women can begin to act effectively in the public arena and be granted
the freedom of choice in basic family issues. Significantly, this is a study of a society misunderstood and prejudged based on the Western
standards. What follows is directed at emphasizing the desire of such cultural and social
communities to adapt to changes in the modern world in the context of their own. What is required
is greater understanding, less prejudice and respect to the desires of these movements to empower
Muslim women based on the principles of Islam.

U.S. Military Presence in the Asia Pacific and Its Effect on the Political Stability in the Region

Title: U.S. Military Presence in the Asia Pacific and Its Effect on the Political Stability in the Region
Authors: Tiong, Christopher Rey
Abstract: The study is about the US military presence in the Asia Pacific and its effect of
the political stability in the region. This study seeks to unearth the interests of the US
forces that explains the presence of US troops in the region. The study also identifies the
military policies of the US Military particularly in the Asia Pacific region.
The study also identifies the factors that define political stability in the
perspective of the people. The study also enumerates the different roles that the US
military forces play in the Asia P􀃅cific region such as the direct and indirect meddling in
the internal affairs of the countries belonging to the region.
This study determines the effect of US military presence on political stability by
identifying the different roles that the US military forces in Asia Pacific play and the
interest of the United States of America in the Asia Pacific region which has warranted
the sending of its troops to the region and cross-referencing these with the factors that
determine the political stability from the perspective of the people. The factors that
determine political stability will serve somewhat as a checklist to determine whether or
not the US military presence in Asia Pacific contributes to political stability or instability.

NSTP in UPM CAS: Problems and Accomplishments (A Study on the NSTP and Its Precursor the ROTC and their Implications on the Students of UP Manila CAS)

Title: NSTP in UPM CAS: Problems and Accomplishments (A Study on the NSTP and Its Precursor the ROTC and their Implications on the Students of UP Manila CAS)
Authors: Sollestre, Sheryl M.
Abstract: Being a citizen of a country requires duties and responsibilities to serve and
protect his country and his people. In so doing, that one is also protecting his/her loved
ones and his/her self aside from contributing for their development and welfare.
The National Service Training Program and its precursor, the Reserve Officers
Training Corps, were mandated to train the youth into socially responsible individuals
aware of their capability and responsibility to help in nation building and national
security. Thus the NSTP, upon being signed into law in 2002, was implemented in the
university having three components-Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS), Literacy
Training Service (LTS), and the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC).
The NSTP was implemented in the university at a time when no one is prepared
for the changes the law entails. The change not only affected the ROTC and its
established programs but the university administration, the colleges, the faculty, and the
students. The NSTP was not implemented in UP Manila without problems. Problems
plaguing the program are also the same problems that affected its precursor, the ROTC -
logistics, personnel, and student motivation to participate in the activities. As of the
moment, the program seems to enjoy a positive influence on their students towards
service and volunteerism. However there are certain areas of the NSTP that should be
addressed and improved for it to better benefit the students and the community.
