Abstract: Most tertiary education curricula in the Philippines require students to undergo an internship or practicum for a specific time period. This study considered 87 responses to measure the effect of pay on the internship dissatisfaction and perceived learning of communication students. It was found through Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient that pay has a significant correlation with student internship dissatisfaction (r = .46) while pay has no significant correlation with perceived learning (r = .07). It was also found through the Goodman 2 Test that learning motivation is a significant mediator between pay and perceived learning. In addition, it was found through regression analyses that pay was a significant predictor of learning motivation. Using the same test, it was found that learning motivation is a significant predictor of perceived learning while pay proved to be otherwise. It is concluded that students are less dissatisfied after completing a paid internship as compared to an unpaid one; and that students’ perceived learning is not affected by the monetary compensation, or the lack thereof.
