A Comparative Study of Adolescents in Single Parent Families and Intact Families Regarding Self-Esteem Issues: The Case of Makati City District 1

Abstract

This study aimed to identify gaps and assess any significant difference between the self-esteem of adolescents rose by single parent families and by two-parent families. Independent sample t-tests were done on adolescents in single-parent families and two-parent families regarding their self-esteem to find out if there were significant differences. Among the group comparisons, the following were noted: (1) there was a significant difference in the self-esteem of female respondents; these include measures of scholastic competence, behavior conduct and family relationships; (2) there was a significant difference in the scholastic competence and family relationships among male respondents; (3) however, there was no significant difference in the self-esteem scores and measures of behavioral conduct among the male respondents. It is also important to note that the global self-esteem scores are significantly below average as defined by the Coopersmith Self Esteem Inventory Scale.
