Abstract: The present study examined effect of Korean ginseng root extract (GRE) on hydrochlorothiazide-induced hyperglycemia in male mice. Preliminary trials revealed no dose-dependent effects of GRE supplementation in test mice. Thus, a single maximum dose was used in the experiment proper. The latter included hyperglycemic test groups given regular poultry feed combined with water alone (H2O Group), with GRE at 2000 mg/kg body weight (GINSENG group), with 0.255 mg/kg glibenclamide (GLIB Group), and an untreated control group. Blood glucose levels were measured at baseline conditions and up to 16 hours after treatment. Data analyses showed that blood glucose levels for every test group were lowest four hours after hyperglycemic induction, however, oral administration of GRE failed to decrease the blood glucose levels of the mice as compared with those treated with glibenclamide.
