Authors: Alit, Elizabeth Y.
Issue Date: Mar-2008
Abstract: The objective of this study was to know the factors that might influence one's perception regarding her body. The researcher has identified six probable factors, family's view, others' opinion, partner's judgment, physical attractiveness, media and health. The study used a descriptive survey questionnaire distributed to 229 female respondents ranging from 16-21 years old and are currently studying in the College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines, Manila. Results show that all of the six factors contribute to the individual's perception regarding their bodies with the greatest influence being the partner's judgment. The study also identified some of the factors that contributed to positive and negative feelings about one's body and the possible effects of body image to the individual. According to the results, body image does not only include the physical aspects of the individual but also the social, emotional and psychological belief and acceptance about one's body.
