dc.description.abstract | This study delves into the intricate craft of Barong Tagalog making in Lumban, Laguna, a town renowned for its mastery in embroidery and garment production. Despite the industry's rich heritage and cultural significance, it shows that it faces contemporary challenges in the transfer of skills and knowledge to younger generations. The primary aim of this research is to identify the factors that contributed to its local industry’s development, the techniques and skills involved in the craft, and describe how the local Barong Tagalog artisans of Lumban view their role in the preservation and promotion of the garment. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the study gathered insights from local artisans, shop owners, and industry participants through interviews and observations. The gathered data underwent the process of thematic analysis. Findings indicate that while the tradition remains a reliable source of income for many, the younger generation's waning interest, driven by modern technological distractions and evolving living standards, poses a significant threat to its continuity. Nevertheless, there is optimism among artisans aged 60 and below, who recognize their dual role in sustaining the industry economically and culturally. Recommendations include comprehensive documentation by the municipal government and the creation of educational literature to facilitate skill transfer without the necessity of formal apprenticeships. Additionally, a comparative analysis with other towns having similar industries is suggested for future research to explore broader implications and innovative practices. The study underscores the resilience of the Barong Tagalog industry, emphasizing that as long as there is demand, the craft will endure, albeit with evolving materials and designs. This research contributes to the understanding of cultural preservation amid economic modernization, offering valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders invested in sustaining traditional crafts. | en_US |
