The socioeconomic impact of PJEPA: the issue of nurses’ migration.

Abstract

The Philippines, with its abundance of human capital, is known as one of the world’s top exporters of labor, with over 1.1 million land-based and sea-based workers leaving the country in 2007. Since then, the number of workers leaving the country has grown significantly. Japan, with its ageing population and lack of nurses, would benefit largely from the Philippines labor export policies which maximize opportunities in the domestic economy and abroad.

The Philippines-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement is a bilateral trade agreement that aims to answer the needs of Philippines and japan. In this research we will focus on one aspect of the EPA – the migration of nurses and its socioeconomic impact.
