Student resistance during the Martial Law period: a case study.

Abstract

The period of martial law that beset in the Philippines was one of the darkest periods in history. President Ferdinand Marcos signed Proclamation 1081 and placed the entire country under his firm grasp in September 21 1972, explaining that he did it to save the Republic and to create what he called a "New Society". What was felt by the nation was his absolute power that became the vehicle which made violence and lawlessness to be widespread. It was during those hard times that the patriotic spirit of the Filipinos was reawaken as many people decided to face the harsh abuses of the regime. In turn, the whole country witnessed the massive outpouring of courage and resistance from different sectors in the society. The height of activism was seen during the period even if the Marcos regime used repressive measures to stifle popular discontent. The students, as being affected by the anti-people policies and repressive measures of the Marcos administration did not stay passive, instead, they spearheaded demonstrations and strikes, they educated the masses and joined them in the struggle towards the realization of democracy. It is beyond doubt that the studentry contributed much to the success of toppling down the Marcos regime.
