dc.description.abstract Across the levels of the economic strata and throughout cultural borders, all people express the need for transportation. It is therefore imperative that the local modes and systems of transport are improved holistically and be achieved under a culturally and economically appropriate framework. However, the Jeepney Modernization Program is a clear threat to the various facets of the jeepney industry. Drawing on government and NGO reports, as well as other documentary sources, this paper examines the nature of current modernization project and the state of local modes of transportation with a primary focus on the jeepney mode in the City of Manila. This research will identify potential dangers in the implementation of a neoliberal brand of modernization and its relationship with the continuing underdevelopment of Philippine mass transportation systems. It is hoped that this research will encourage a process of rethinking the modernization and a critical re-evaluation of the project to obtain the acceptance and support of the jeepney sector. This study emphasizes the value of sustainable development towards the marginalized sectors and demonstrates why the poor has a right to mobility and livelihood. This study will give in to detail how the transformation towards a greener, efficient, and effective jeepney system is possible with the help and collaboration of government providing technical, scientific, and environmental support and the cooperation of the transport groups as well. en_US
