Interpersonal Communication Process within the Medical Team in Providing Patient Care in a Tertiary Provincial Public Hospital.

Abstract

The research aims to describe the interpersonal communication within medical teams in a public hospital in the Philippines. In the process of health care provision, the research shall shed light on the various communication processes that take place and which methods and tools are utilized. An interview method is used to provide and in-depth analysis on the perspective of healthcare providers who are members of the medical team. An interview regarding hospital communication processes and how they function with it, the processes they go through with regards to healthcare provision, and their perceived outcome, are all discussed. Interview data reveals that processes differ according to the field of experience and designated location of the healthcare provider and the outcomes are perceived to be related to it. Research interprets the interview response as a reflection of the differences in field of experiences and how these differences are, through the process of communication, shared within the team and into the process leads to better patient health outcome. With this, the research sees communication: as a tool which operates well within a pre- set structure, an avenue for improvement in the process and a factor in healthcare provision. Recommendations to improve on these communication processes are given.
