A Case Study on the Solid Waste Management Problems in Blumentritt, Sta. Cruz, Manila

Abstract

Tire study aims to assess the solid waste management problems in Blumentritt, Sta. Cruz, Manila. Specifically, it intends to describe the current situation of solid waste management in the area, determine how the local officials of barangays and the City government are carrying out Solid Waste Management, establish how the residents of Blumentritt participate in Solid Waste Management, learn lessons from the Solid Waste Management practices of the area and make necessary and important recommendations regarding solid waste management. The study used key-informant interview and survey with several people from each barangay specially the chairmen from 12 barangays as respondents. One hundred (100) survey questionnaires were distributed to determine the people’s participation in waste management in the 12 barangays. The result of the study established that the usual problems the residents have to deal with were health hazards, flood occurrence, unclean surroundings and environmental degradation. The worst problem generated along the area is flood occurrence as well as problems on cleanliness and sanitation, inefficient drainage and waterways system in Blumentritt. Solid waste management problems in Blumentritt are caused by poor quality performance of the government in providing better services to the people, low participation of households on effective solid waste management due to lack of knowledge on the system itself and the lack of discipline, initiative and proper behavior of the people in waste disposal. Finally, recommendations were made to help the community and city government carry out a more efficient Solid Waste Management Program in the future.
