The Qualities of the Best OrCom Theses from 1998 to 2007

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to find out the qualities of the Best OrCom Theses from 1998 to 2007. In order to address this problem, the study was able to do the following: (1) determined the aspects of organizational communication were studied by the Best OrCom Theses from 1998 to 2007 using the metaphors of organizational communication research developed by Putnam, Phillips, and Chapman (1996), (2) identified the descriptions Best OrCom Thesis awardees have of their works and their characteristics as researchers, (3) determined the opinions shared by thesis advisers regarding the characteristics of the Best OrCom Theses from 1998 to 2007, and (4) determined the views shared by some panelists regarding the assessment of the quality of a student’s research work. In addition, this study was done not only to recognize the efforts of those involved in producing the Best OrCom Theses from 1998 to 2007, but it is also significant because it sheds light on what are considered as qualities of a good research under the OrCom program. Moreover, this study used a qualitative design. Firstly, it made use of a qualitative content analysis to determine the aspects of organizational communication covered by the Best OrCom Theses from 1998 to 2007 using the metaphors of organizational communication research developed by Putnam et al (1996). Secondly, the researcher developed three interview schedules which were administered according to the categories of interviewees, namely: the Best OrCom Thesis awardees from 1998 to 2007, their thesis advisers, and some panelists. The data gathered were then coded and organized accordingly into four separate matrices. The findings from the study suggest that the Best OrCom Theses included in the study were able to cover different aspects of an organization, not just concerned directly on the communication. Second, in terms of form, some qualities of the Best OrCom Theses mentioned include how well it was written and its coherence. In terms of the contributions, the Best OrCom Theses from 1998 to 2007 are useful and applicable. Furthermore, the Best OrCom Theses from 1998 to 2007 were also described as valid and reliable and appropriate in terms of the research methods used. Other qualities of a good OrCom research mentioned in the study include good conceptualization, innovativeness, and depth. The findings also suggest that it would be helpful if the student who will conduct a study has the positive attitude towards research, the right intellectual abilities and work values, good writing skills, and a personal interest in the topic, among others.
