Abstract:
This research examined the relationship between level of group organizational citizenship behavior (GOCB) and level of group cohesiveness among employees of Spark Marketing and Research Services, Inc. A total of 81 telesales representatives and 5 team leaders participated in the descriptive study.
To obtain the data to be used in the study, survey questionnaires containing items on the demographic profile of the respondent, a modified version of the Perceived Cohesion Scale (PCS), and a modified version of the GOCB Scale, were distributed via purposive sampling to the employees. Completed questionnaires were collected during the same day it was distributed.
To analyze the information, several measurement techniques were used. To determine the level of group cohesiveness and level of GOCB, mean values were obtained. Then canonical correlation was used to determine the overall relationship of the two variables. The relationships of the dimensions of each variable were measured using Spearman’s Rho correlation.
Analysis of data revealed that the level of group cohesiveness and level of GOCB among employees in the company are perceived as moderately high. Findings confirm that the level of group cohesiveness is positively related with the level of GOCB; canonical correlation coefficient indicated a moderately strong relationship between the two variables.
The study has implications on the development of team work practices and managerial procedures focused on supporting GOCB performance and group cohesiveness. Future research can make the findings more generalizable by using random sampling and applying the study to different industries, or using two or more companies of the same business. Experimental and longitudinal studies may also yield varying results.
