dc.description.abstract Ganoderma lucidum has been used for centuries in cancer prevention and treatment in China and other Asian countries. This study aimed to determine if polysaccharides from G. lucidum (PS-G) extracts can elicit antitumor responses in HT-29 human colon adenocarcinoma tumor- induced female BALB/c mice. Immunosuppressed mice from control (CSS, n=6) and treatment (CPG, n=10) groups were xenografted with 1 x 106 HT-29 cancer cells. After nine days of tumor growth, the groups were treated with NSS (control) and PS-G (treatment). Tumor volume was measured once daily using a vernier caliper. The tumors were excised after five days of treatment and were cut into serial cross sections and stained with Hematoxylin & Eosin for histopathological analysis. Statistical analysis shows that there is a significant difference in the mean tumor volume before and after five days of PS-G treatment. Also, the tumor morphology of PS-G treated mice showed greater percent area of tumor necrosis (mean = 39.17%) as compared to NSS treated mice (mean = 7%). Mycelia- derived PS-G demonstrated antitumor effect and immunostimulating effect on the action rather than the proliferation of immune cells. en_US
