The concept of domestic workers and family are broad fields of study
encompassing a wide range of interest. This study focused on integrating the domestic
workers or kasambahays into the concept of a Filipino family. It focused on determining
the concept of extended family as in the case of kasambahays. Specifically, the study
intended to describe the socio-demographic profile of kasambahays, to describe the
socio-demographic profile of kasambahay's employers, to describe the nature of work,
responsibilities and relationship of kasambahay with employer and family members, and
to determine the factors responsible for the nature of the relationship and treatment of
kasambahay in the employer's household
A total of 100 kasambahays and 100 employers were given self-constructed
questionnaires to get the data needed. AU the respondents were from the National Capital
Region. The Social Exchange theory was used as the theoretical framework to give
further explanations to the data gathered.
Based on the results, there exist a family-like relationship between majority of the
kasambahays and employers surveyed. There subsists a good working and non-working
relationship between both parties. This relationship then led to the kasambahay's longer
employment time. Eventually, their views towards each other led to a family-like one.
However, it was found out that the family-like ideology found between the two is not
similar to that of consanguineal family. This family-like ideology present in the employer
and kasambahay's relationship is easy to break by one wrongdoing of the kasambahay. |
