Abstract:
This study examines the degree of political consciousness of taxi drivers in Metro
Manila. Although they were not able to finish their education and belong to low socioeconomic
class, cab drivers are claimed to be well-informed about political news and
events. The researcher posits that the taxi drivers have a high degree of political
awareness due to their daily exposure to mass media such as radio and tabloids,
frequent political discussion with their passengers, and active involvement in civic political
organizations. She used participant observations, focused group discussions,
and self-administered survey to examine whether the political awareness of the taxi
drivers is really high. Using content analysis and theme coding, she found out that they
have a high level of political consciousness. The findings partially supported the initial
assertion since their level of political consciousness can be attributed to involvement
and civic-political organizations. The study also revealed that the television also has a
significant impact on the political consciousness of taxi driver.
