Abstract:
This study entitled, "An In-Depth Analysis on the Effects of Trade Liberalization in
the Livestock and Poultry Industry of San Jose, Batangas”, discusses the past and present
conditions of the livestock and poultry industry of San Jose, Batangas. It also analyzes the
adverse effects of trade liberalization in the said vital industry.
The livestock and poultry industry is considered to be one of the most important
components of agricultural sector of the country. In view thereof livestock and poultry
raising have been the most prominent livelihood in San Jose, Batangas and in various parts of
the country as well. However, the said industry has been confronted with several problems
such as backward production, import-dependence, feeds monopoly and complex marketing.
These basic problems in the livestock and poultry industry have been even more aggravated
by the fact that the Philippine government implemented trade liberalization policies in the
country. This severe and dreadful situation of the livestock and poultry industry was
particularly ignited by the country's accession to the GATT-UT/WTO.
Truly, trade liberalization has detrimental effects to the livestock and poultry industry
of San Jose, Batangas. The influx of imported live animals and meat products has extremely
affected the livelihood of livestock and poultry raisers of the said area of observation.
Therefore, the government must certainly implement measures and mechanisms that will put
trade liberalization, particularly the GATT-UR/WTO, to its downfall.
