In order to determine whether the maternal health programs are making an impact on the
situation and lives of the Filipino mothers, infants and families as a whole, a monitoring system is
needed. The surveillance system developed covers women of reproductive age from all over the
country. Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) play a vital role in the entering and handling of data from
which pregnancy-related reports will be based on. They are allowed to register pregnancies, maternal
deaths, and submit outcome, prenatal care and postnatal care reports.
The Pregnancy Surveillance System was designed to identify pregnancy, its outcome for
mother and infant, and activities such as prenatal and postnatal care health services through the use
of the internet and the short messaging service (SMS) of mobile phones. With the system, online
viewers can now look at the country's updated and categorized maternal health data and statistics. |
