Abstract:
There are a lot of studies about the elderly around the world. In the Philippines, similar material is limited and outdated, particularly on those living in institutions for the senior citizens. This study assessed the level of quality of life of those who are at least 60 years old, and living in a nursing home in Metro Manila. Using an adapted questionnaire WHOQOL-BREF Fil OP by Dr. Shelley F. de la Vega, this research aims to examine the Quality of Life of Senior Citizens living in a local government-run nursing home. Sequential explanatory method was used, which has two phases of data collection –survey and interview. A total of 108 elderly people participated in the first phase, 45 males and 63 females. Of the 108, five were selected for the second phase. Five house parents, who take care of the elderly in the institutions, were also interviewed. It was found that item Energy had the highest mean and percentage score at fourth and fifth scales under Physical domain; the item Healthy Environment has the highest mean under Psychological domain; under the Environmental domain, the item Leisure had the highest mean; and Relationships had the highest mean and percentage score under the Social Relations domain and among the 25 items. Results showed good overall QOL based on the four domains. Among the three general questions, General Health has the highest mean and percentage score at third and fourth scales. Lastly, among the four domains, the Psychological domain had the highest mean, while the Environmental domain had the lowest.
