Abstract:
The respondents of this research adhere to the traditional male and female gender roles. They also regard
highly the institutions of marriage and family. In relation
to this, the participants in this thesis stated that there
might be justifiable reasons for a man to beat his wife.
Most samples expressed their tolerance for violence in
Situations when the wife is neglectful of the children and
household chores; when the wife is a nagger; or when the
wife refuses sexual intercourse with her husband. They
however stressed that although there are situations where
violence may be understandable, men still do not have the
right to batter their wives.
