Urban poverty is a product of the shift from an agriculturally dependent economy to an industrially dependent economy. It is marked by the exodus of people from rural areas to urban areas. When this happens, population in urban areas increases and job opportunities easily become scarce. This compels the unemployed to engage in other means for income. One such kind of means is the putting up of sari-sari stores. This study looked into the phenomenon of the proliferation of sari-sari stores in urban areas, particularly small communities along West Zamora Ave., Pandacan. Through extensive research, interviews and surveys, a relationship between poverty, population and the proliferation of sari-sari stores was made. In addition, this study was able to identify where most of the residents in West Zamora emigrated from. It was identified that many of the residents in West Zamora have come from Aklan. The study also tried to establish a generalization as to whether sari-sari stores are able to provide enough to cater to the needs of the owners and their families. This assumption was found to be true for many of the respondents. |
