Abstract:
This study applied content analysis on the text messages of selected UP Manila College of
Arts and Sciences students. The identification of the role of text messaging in communication is
the main objective of this study. The period of the study was on September 5S to September 11,
1999. Text messaging at this time was a free, value-added service of cellular phones.
The text messages sent and received were categorized according to their function and
were classified into 6 categories: defining, directing, inquiring, narrating, greeting and
combinations of the functions. Results indicate that 53.67% are narrating messages. These
messages were stating information, narrating stories, jokes, and conversations with other text
users. Inquiring messages sent rank second to narrating messages with 23.32%. The respondents
used mixed codes in sending most of their messages. Furthermore, 42.6% of the received
messages were also narrating. These were mostly forwarded messages like quotes, jokes and
stories coming from other texters. Messages received were in English and mixed codes. Using
English and code switching allows the text user to encode faster and shorten messages to fit the
130-160 character space of cellular telephones.
In addition, the time and day most of the messages were sent and received were
considered. Most messages were sent during Sunday, September 5. Sunday is considered rest
day. Respondents keep in touch with friends, classmates and relatives through text. Most
messages were received during Monday, September 6. According to respondents this is because
Monday is the beginning of the school week. Most messages are sent and received between 7 am
to 12 noon.
it has been found out that those respondents with a boyfriend/girlfriend sent and
received relatively less text messages than those respondents not involved in a
boyfriend/ girlfriend relationship.
This study determined that most messages sent were in mixed codes and most messages
received were in English or mixed code. This finding shows that the communication device alters
the form of messages.
The results of this study appear to indicate that text messaging and cellular phones Is a
medium of uncensored and hassle-free communication. Text message is a two-way
communication device, that allow users to communicate beyond the space or structure made by
other communication gadgets. The communication device and service allows mobility and
accessibility.
Text messaging expand man's capabilities by providing an alternative means of
connecting with one another at greater distances. Keeping in touch is at the tip of the fingers. It
makes an individual survive in an age where man is required to have a high degree of
connectivity to meet the demands if his needs.
