Abstract:
From the 1960's to the present, the Philippines
suffers from extreme economic depression. This, makes lives
for Filipinos difficult due to the lack of employment
brought about by the ailing economy. Poverty rate is at its
high which, sad to mention, continues to increase even
further as time passes by.
Different leaders of the Philippines have tried to
implement policies to alleviate its ailing economy to the
point of borrowing money from different foreign
institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and
the World Bank (WB). One among these policies is the
exportation of labor to earn foreign exchange that are used
for debt servicing and for the procurement of the needed
inputs that would help alleviate its economy. These
Filipinos destinations are U.S, Canada, Hong Kong, Saudi
Arabia, and Japan.
Among these Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) the ones
that go to Japan (Japayukis) are exploited the most due to
the nature of their work as entertainers in different
“Nightclubs” in Japan. This, subjects them to extreme
emotional distresses. As strict immigration laws and
employment contracts govern them, their repatriation is inevitable. Coming back, they face again the uncertainties
of their homeland.
Since they remit high foreign exchanye and suffer work
related exploitations the Philippine government should
treat them with utmost concern. However, coming back home
this is not the case. The Philippine government lacks
policies concerning these entertainers. And as the
researcher communed with these Japayukis, they confirmed
that the government lacks policies for their proper
reintegration to the Philippine society.
It is imperative for the Philippine government to look
upon this issue since it is the one who benefits a lot from
these entertainers.
