Human resources is considered one of the most important entities in any
organization. Without people an organization will not be able to function
positively. They are those that help in the continuous operation of all other
entities of an organization such as materials and technologies.
This is the reason why organizations are addressing the needs of their
workforce to keep them satisfied and working efficiently. Trainings and other
corporate activities are what workers need to help them achieve these.
Trainings given to workers of the organizations include activities that
would teach them in performing their tasks more efficiently. However in recent
times organizations do not only employ trainings to their own employees but to
their potential employees as well, such as in the students. On-the-Job Training
(OJT) offered by different organizations is one obvious activity of this trend.
ABS-CBN Publishing, Inc. is one of the many organizations today that saw the
potential of training the students.
This study on Expectation and Satisfaction Levels Among Student
Trainees of ABS-CBN Publishing, Inc. aims to find out the levels of expectation of
student trainees and their perceived level of satisfaction and the limitations of the
training program offered by the said company. By considering the expectation
and satisfaction levels of student trainees the company will be able to determine
whether their training program is sufficient in meeting the needs of their student
trainees. 7
Respondents of this study were limited to the student trainees of ABSCBN
Publishing, Inc, who worked from June to October 2004 in different
departments. Only six, out of fifteen, agreed to be respondents for this study.
Data gathered and analysis of the expectation and satisfaction levels therefore
were only limited to these six respondents.
An individual interview of each respondent were conducted to elicit
expectation and satisfaction levels of student trainees of ABS-CBN Publishing,
Inc.'s training program. The interview schedule consists of thirteen questions
divided into three parts. Each of the parts had questions regarding the student
trainees’ expectations, satisfaction levels, and the limitations of the training
program. All of the information were from the student trainees and none from the
employees or the management. The student trainees’ expectation and
satisfaction levels were analyzed in the areas of the trainers’ supervision,
workplace, task assignments, and the training procedure.
Information gathered from the interview showed that student trainees
generally were satisfied with the training they were given and that their
expectations were met. However, even if they were satisfied they saw some limitations of the training program. Their first concern was that, student trainees
should be placed in departments where their qualifications a"e appropriate. The
orientation consisted of the rules and regulations and the guidelines of the
training program, however respondents saw that orientation on different
departments and their individual functions are important to be discussed. This
way Student trainees know why such department is present as well as its
essence. Respondents also saw the tour as important part of the program
because trainees need to be acquainted not only with the different departments
but with the whole company as well. A lecture on the what, why, and how of the
tasks assignments are essential for trainees to know the importance of what they
are doing and for them to perform efficiently. A healthy working relationship not
only to their direct supervisors but to other employees of the company are crucial
in facilitating a harmonious working environment for the trainees and for them to
easily learn the tasks assigned to them. Verbal appreciation when they have.
performed their tasks well are not enough compensation but monetary reward
should be given. This is because respondents noticed that not all of the student
trainees can afford to pay for their fare and buy themselves food. They at least
need allowance to sustain themselves while working in the company. Lastly, the
workplace should have enough space for the trainees to work on and to move
around. Respondents said that they were given limited space that made them
feel uncomfortable in doing their tasks.
It is important to inquire about the expectations and satisfaction levels of
the student trainees to determine whether what the training program should
include. By meeting the expectations of the student trainees, at the end of the
training program, organizations are sure that they have satisfied them and that
resources such as money, time, and effort are maximized. This way
organizations prevent themselves from spending resources in activities that are
not cost-effective and would only go into waste. |
