Abstract:
Evident in the Philippine context is the close family ties, therefore, making the
family one of the major factors of how one views oneself. It is the family which directly
and obliquely shapes one's perceptions about himself/herself and his/her attitude. The
relationship among family members. including parent-child, sibling, and marital
subsystems. has a great influence on the development of an individual. Developmental
psychologists have recognized the importance of parenting throughout the years. Parents
play a large role in fostering their child's growth and development. One of the robust
factors in parenting is the parenting style. That is why parenting style is among the key
determinants of an individual's outcome.
This is the study of the Relationship Between the Adolescents' Self-Esteem and
the Percei ,eel Parenting Styles. The objectives of the study are the following: (I) to
determine the different parenting styles. (2) to define and understand the self-esteem of
the adolescents, and (3) to determine the significant difference in the level of self-esteem
of the adolescents with different parenting styles.
The study used quantitative method of research. It was conducted using self administered
survey-type questionnaires among 4th year high school students. The
questionnaire was designed in three parts, as follows: (I) Demographic Profile, (II)
Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale, and (III) Different parenting styles. Data were gathered
among five (5) 4th year high school sections of De La Salle-Lipa. There was a total of
187 respondents (males = 77; females = 110). After the data collection and analysis, the
researcher found out that there is a significant difference in the level of self-esteem with
varying parenting styles at <.00 I. However, the family structures have no significant
difference in the level of self-esteem of the adolescents.
It is concluded that an adolescent's self-esteem is greatly affected by the parenting
style employed by their parents. However, the parenting styles used by the parents do not
vary on the birth order of the respondents. It is also concluded that the family structures
have no significant difference in the level of self-esteem of the respondents.
The study made some recommendations for parents, professionals and future
researchers.
