This study aimed to determine the effects of experimental heat waves on the health and reproductive characteristics of Pomacea canaliculata. One hundred twenty male and female snail samples were collected from a stream in Lemery, Batangas. Half of these snails were used for gonadosomatic index while the other half was used for histological evaluation of gonads. Parameters such as shell length, clutch size and clutch area were measured. Correlation analysis showed that time is inversely related to shell length. However, no correlation was seen between temperature and shell length. Moreover, variability in temperature rendered a significant effect on the gonadosomatic index. It resulted in an increase in the GSI for females, but a decrease in the GSI for males. The experimental heat waves caused an increase in clutch parameters while it caused anomalies on the gonad histology of both males and females. |
