Authors: Dacanay, Jayson Roy H.
Issue Date: Mar-2009
Abstract: This descriptive survey research aims to identify the relationship between the perceptions of grapevine and work performance among the Human Resource Management Department employees of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. Having Laswell’s communication model, the researcher conceptualized and operationalized an appropriate framework for this study. This research could contribute 1.) to the vast amount of academic researches within the University of the Philippines Manila, other universities and to the field of Organizational Communication; 2.) to the organization being studied by helping them to be aware of the grapevine communication in terms of its sources, content and frequency; and 3.) to existing knowledge that links grapevine and work performance. This study was administered on a single department only of BSP. It is also prone to the threat of internal validity since the researcher did not personally distribute the instrument to the respondents. And since grapevine and work performance are both abstract concepts that cannot be measured directly, it was gauged using three determinants only for each concept. Also work performance is measured based only on the self-assessment of the employees. The research uses the descriptive design based on a survey of respondents and is based on ‘census’ of the employees of HRMD. Survey questionnaire was the instrument utilized therefore this study used the quantitative approach. Frequency distribution, mean distribution, cross tabulation, and Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient R are the main methods used to analyze and interpret the gathered data. In conclusion, the study found out that there is relationship between the perceptions of grapevine and work performance among the Human Resource Management Department (HRMD) employees of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). The researcher found out that there is a moderate possibility (56%) that as the level of grapevine increases, the work performance level also increases and vice versa. It is recommended to conduct a case study on the potential relationship of grapevine and job satisfaction of employees. A comparative study of an organization with ‘more talk about work’ and another organization with ‘more talk about personal things’ could be a good topic for research. A more in depth study measuring work performance based on the evaluation of self, peer, and superior could be an interesting topic for research. It is also recommended to conduct the survey on a bigger population. Bigger in terms of including other departments of the bank, the whole organization, or other organizations as well in order to have a possible better result.
