Title: A Descriptive Study of the Use of Oral Presentations Competency and Leadership Effectiveness

Abstract: The study's general aim is to determine the degree of association between the Use of Oral Presentations (UOP) Competency scores and Leadership Effectiveness description of the selected Middle Level Managers. The Behavioral Event Interview along with its corresponding coding system (Boyatzis, 1982) was used to measure the UOP Competency of the Middle Level Managers, while the Least Preferred Co-Worker scale, Leader-Member Relations scale, Task Structure scale, and Position Power scale (Fiedler & Chemers, 1984) were used to determine the Leadership Effectiveness description of the Middle Level Managers. Self-report and direct report responses were gathered from a total of 26 respondents: 5 of which were the Middle Level Managers, while 21 were their direct subordinates. Six of the respondents were from the Software Development Group of the Philippine National Bank head office; 6 were from the ATM Operations Group of the Philippine National Bank head office; and 14 were from the Retail Banking Sectors of the Philippine National Bank head office, Philippine National Bank - BSP Service Unit, and Asia United Bank - Annapolis Branch. Two of the Middle Level Managers were found to be effective (according to Fiedler's theory) and they also had higher UOP Competency scores as compared to the ineffective leaders. The results showed that there is a strong association between the UOP Competency scores (Boyatzis, 1982) and Leadership Effectiveness description (Fiedler, 1967) of the selected Middle Level Managers.
