dc.description.abstractThe objective of this study is to determine the level of job satisfaction of staff as managed by the value dimension of the department heads of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of the Philippines Manila. In line with this objective, the researcher posed the following sub-questions: (1) “What is the value dimension of the department chairpersons?"; (2) “How is the job satisfaction of each staff of the department?" and (3) "How does the department chairperson manage his or her staff?" These aided the main problem of the study, which is, “What is the level of the job satisfaction of staff as affected by the department heads of UPM-CAS in a particular value dimension?" This study employed both the quantitative and qualitative approaches. However, this study primarily used a quantitative approach and the qualitative as a secondary approach. Using two survey questionnaires for the quantitative, five (5) department chairpersons and thirteen (13) staff members of the five departments were the respondents for each set of questionnaires. The first questionnaire determines the kind of value dimension a person possesses was given to the department chairpersons. Meanwhile, the second questionnaire, which determines the level of job satisfaction of subordinates, was given to the staff members of the five departments. Then, the qualitative approach was done through an interview with the department chairpersons just to know the way they manage their staff that supports the findings in the questionnaire they took. Results revealed that among the five department chairpersons in UPM-CAS, four were collectivistic and only one was individualistic. As for the job satisfaction of the staff members of each department, data revealed that the supervision domain is the highest and the monetary benefits domain is the lowest. With data revealed in the interview, the individualistic department chairperson is benevolent authoritative and then collectivistic department chairpersons 2, 3, and 4 is consultative, while the collectivistic department chairperson 5 is participative. With the gathered survey and interview results, it was found that the levels of job satisfaction of staff were not quite apart. Hence, the staff was satisfied of their jobs regardless of the department chairperson's value dimension. The researcher recommends that a bigger number of respondents be used to conduct a parallel study in other fields like in corporate institutions. Moreover, the researcher suggests looking further on the kind of management needed not only by the staff but also of teachers.en_US
